How to Clean the Inside of Your Fridge
A thorough cleaning of your refrigerator should be done at least every three months, though depending on use, you may need to do it more frequently. The best time to clean is before a grocery run when the fridge is less full. Follow these steps:
Empty the Fridge: Remove all food items. Store perishables in a cooler to keep them fresh.
Unplug the Refrigerator: This ensures safety and energy savings during cleaning.
Remove Shelves and Drawers: Wash them in the sink using colorless, neutral detergent and a soft sponge dedicated to this task (do not use the same sponge as for dishes to avoid cross-contamination). Let them air-dry completely.
Prepare a Cleaning Solution: In a spray bottle, mix 5 ml (1 teaspoon) of colorless detergent with 500 ml of water. Spray the mixture on a soft sponge and wipe down the entire interior of the fridge, working from top to bottom.
Wipe Away Residue: Use a paper towel or disposable cloth to remove any soap residue. Then, wipe again with a slightly damp cloth to ensure no detergent remains.
Dry and Reassemble: Once everything is dry, plug the fridge back in and return the food items.
How to Remove Odors from Your Fridge
To prevent bad odors, clean your fridge regularly and store food in tightly sealed containers. Here are some tips for keeping it fresh:
Charcoal: Place a piece of charcoal in the fridge to neutralize odors. Protect the shelf by placing the charcoal on a paper towel.
Coffee Grounds: Alternatively, use a wide dish of coffee grounds to absorb smells. Replace it every 30 days.
How to Clean the Outside of Your Fridge
For the exterior, avoid using any abrasive materials that could scratch the surface of white or stainless steel models. Use soft sponges or microfiber cloths:
Prepare a Solution: In a spray bottle, mix 500 ml of water with 15 ml (1 tablespoon) of neutral, colorless detergent. Spray the solution onto a cloth and wipe the surface.
For Tough Stains: If necessary, use a multi-surface cleaner or liquid cleanser for tougher grime, but limit their use to rare occasions. Routine cleaning should be done with a cloth dampened with water and detergent.
Polish Stainless Steel: If your fridge is stainless steel, you can apply a metal polish for added shine.
Clean the Back: Use a dry cloth to dust the back of the refrigerator (after it's been unplugged for a few minutes). Also, consider removing and cleaning the tray located at the back of the fridge.
What to Avoid
When cleaning the inside of your fridge, stick to colorless, neutral detergent. Avoid using:
Alcohol
Disinfectants
Multi-surface cleaners
Bleach
Vinegar or baking soda
Additionally, do not use abrasive materials such as the green side of sponges or brushes, as these can damage surfaces. And be sure to use dedicated cleaning tools for your fridge, separate from those used for other parts of the house to prevent cross-contamination.
By following these tips, you can maintain a clean, odor-free fridge that helps keep your food safe and fresh.
